Ryanair is a no frills airline that offers low cost flights from all major Uk airports to Fuerteventura. Here is more of what is behind the success of one of the travel industries most important carriers...Ryanair

More About Ryanair

In 1992 another EU deregulation of the air industry allowed another major opportunity for Ryanair. This meant that an airline from one EU country now had the right to operate scheduled services between any other EU countries. (For example, this is what now allows Ryanair, an Irish Airline, to operate services between Madrid and Fuerteventura, or indeed London and Madrid!).

Ryanair’s has used “free” advertising to very good use. Mostly this involves Michael O’Leary deliberately courting some kind of controversy, usually with a press statement, which never fails to make the newspapers as well as the television news headlines… therefore generating totally free publicity!

One example of this was, on an extremely quiet day for news Ryanair announced that it was seriously considering charging one pound to passengers each time they wished to use the toilet on their flights. This made headlines for several days. (Including such headlines as “Ryanair announce ´Pay-Per-Poo’ service”). However, a week later O’Leary confirmed that the whole thing was a publicity stunt and said “It is not likely to happen, but it makes for interesting and very cheap PR!”.

In 2000 Ryanair launched its website. Online booking initially was said by Ryanair to be only a very small and unimportant part of the reason for the site. However, within just a year of Ryanair setting it up, the website site was handling three-quarters of all bookings! It was then realised that this online booking could actually contribute to helping to further cut flight prices by selling direct to passengers and therefore totally exclude all of the costs that had to be paid to travel agents.

Today it is only possible to book seats via the website or via the “Ryanair direct” call-centre. To learn more specifically about Ryanairs flights to Fuerteventura click here….

All About Ryanair

Ryanair is an Irish low-cost airline that has its head office at Dublin Airport, its other main base being at London Stansted Airport.

Ryanair operates around 250 aircraft on well over 1,100 routes across the whole of Europe as well as Morocco. It now operates from over 40 bases.

In Europe, Ryanair is the largest low-cost carrier. It is also the 3rd largest airline in Europe in terms of passenger numbers.

Ryanair was founded by Christopher Ryan, Liam Lonergan and Tony Ryan (that’s why it’s called Ryanair!) in 1985.

The airline started out with just a 15-seat plane that flew between Waterford (the largest city in the South East of Ireland) and Gatwick Airport. At that time on London to Ireland flights were almost exclusively held by British Airways and Aer Lingus, and Ryanair were keen to break into the market in which the two airways had dominant control.

At this time there became a partial EU Deregulation for airlines in order to encourage more flights within Europe. This deregulation meant that all it now needed for Ryanair to set up further destinations was to get one of the two governments of the intended destinations to give their approval. Ryanair applied to the Irish Government who refused permission in order to protect Aer Lingus. Luckily for Ryanair, Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government was extremely pro-free market and so approved Ryanair’s application. This allowed Ryanair free to expand and so in 1986 it added a second route – flying from Dublin to Luton.

With two planes on two different routes the new airline carried over 82,000 passengers in just one year.

Over the years, passenger numbers continued to increase however Ryanair ran at a loss most of the time, therefore in 1991 it was decided that it was in need of restructuring. O’Leary was made deputy chief executive of Ryanair- given the job of making the airline profitable.

O’Leary visited Southwest Airlines, the American low-cost airline. Southwest Airlines had (and still do!) an extremely successful business model that involved flying multiple short, quick trips, generally into smaller and less costly airports, and using only one type of aircraft (the Boeing 737)

O’Leary realised that this business model, based upon “No – Frills” was the way ahead for Ryanair, (with the key to low fares being a very quick turn-around times for planes). . In 1994 O’Leary was promoted to chief executive. Ryanair’s low-cost business model was so successful that by its 10th birthday, in 1995, it carried 2.25 million passengers…..for more about Ryanair click here

Thomson Holidays is a holiday company that is based in the UK. It is part of the Tui Travel Group.

Thomson Holidays was first started in 1965 by Canadian businessman Roy Thomson. Roy Herbert Thomson (June 5th 1894- August 4th 1976) was born in Toronto, Ontario June 5 1894.

After WWI Thomson became a radio salesman in Northern Ontario, but he found this really hard as there really were not that many radio stations around that part of the world. So, in order to make selling radios easier to potential customers he thought he had better start up a radio station! This he did in 1931 and although he still sold radios for quite a long time after that, his main business became the radio station. Having made a very large success of this Thomson went on to buy lots more radio stations and also newspapers in various Ontario locations ( by the early 50s he owned nineteen newspapers in total!). Thomson expanded his empire into the British newspaper business which went to include The Times and The Sunday Times as well as buying Scottish Television. In 1964 Thomson was made a British Citizen.

In 1965 Roy Thomson created Thomson Holidays which he built by having bought a few smaller travel companies as well as the airline Britannia Airways.

In 1972 Thomson Holidays also bought the travel agency Lunn Poly. Poly travel was founded in 1888 and named Poly travel because it was set up by Regent Street Polytechnic. It provided a travel service only for students but in the 50s- because its travel programme was so popular-, it was renamed Poly Travel Ltd and its holidays were opened up to the public. Sir Henry Lunn Travel was founded by Sir Henry Simpson Lunn (July 30 1859-March 18 1939) five years after Poly Travel. After many years of rivalry The Poly and Lunn groups merged in 1965 when Lunns acquired Poly Travel and the company became Lunn Poly. This went on to be one of the biggest chains of travel agents in Britain. When Thomson Holidays bought the travel agency Lunn Poly in 1972 the travel company had an extremely large high street presence (it was 32 years later, in 2004, that The Lunn Poly brand was finally put under the banner of Thomson Holidays ).

In 2000 Tui Travel PLC acquired Thomson Travel.

Thomas Cook – About The Company

Thomas Cook the travel company was founded by Englishman Thomas Cook in the mid 19th Century.
Born 22 November 1808 in the village of Melbourne, Derbyshire, Thomas Cook left school aged about 10 and started out as an assistant to a local gardener and then aged 14 he got a job as as a cabinet maker which he did for 5 years. He became a Baptist missionary in 1828.

It was on 5 July 1841 that Thomas Cook arranged his first excursion. He was in charge of making arrangements for a group to go to a meeting in Loughborough. Thomas cook arranged for the rail company to charge one shilling per person that included rail tickets and food for the train journey and he was paid a share of the fares. This became the first public excursion by train in the UK! He did this three years running until in 1844 the Midland Counties Railway Company arranged to make this permanent arrangement, encouraging him to find more passengers. Because this was so successful it led to Thomas Cook starting his own business running rail excursions- always taking a percentage of all of the tickets sold.
Thomas Cook’s business grew to now include a railway tour of Europe, and so in the 1860′s he started the travel company with the name Thomas Cook and sons, which now expanded to include tours of America.
Thomas Cook and Sons grew larger and more successful. By the late 1880s the company had set up offices all around the world. These included 3 in Australia and 1 in New Zealand. In 1890 the company sold over 3.25 million tickets!
In the 1950s Thomas Cook, having been nationalised in 1948, began promoting foreign holidays in a big way to members of the public in Britain across Europe especially in Spain, Switzerland and Italy.
Over the years and many succeses Thomas Cook announced in 2007 a merger with the travel company MyTravel. The new group was named Thomas Cook Group plc.

Thomas Cook now has a total fleet of almost 100 aircraft, nearly 3000 stores and in the neighborhood of 33,000 employees. With an average of over 19.1 million customers per year, Thomas Cook has now become the second largest travel company in the UK and in Europe after TUI Travel.
